Founded in 1979, the Department got it's first apparatus, from a department in Union Point, Georgia.
The second apparatus was purchased in 1983, when the members of the department all signed a loan at a local bank. With that loan, they purchased a 1963 Hahn Engine. The engine was pulled from service in 2002, and donated to Charlton County Volunteer Fire Department in 2004 who had the means to repair it and return it to service.
The Department also got it's first home when a local community member donated a parcel of land to the city government. The agreement was that the land could remain in the control of the city for use as city hall, as long as the fire department was co-located there. To this day, the department still shares this building with the City of GumBranch.
The county's Fire Authority set $35,000.00 aside in 1998 for a second station to be located on the other end ofthe district. In 2003, land was purchased near the western edge of the district along GA Hwy 196.
Around 2005, the County Commissioners paid for a Fire Services Consultation to evaluate the fire protection within the county. This lead to the development of the new Liberty County Master Fire Plan adopted by the County Commissioners in 2006. It was determined in this survey that the station needed to be centrally located in our district so as to be within 5 road miles of every residence, in line with current ISO requirements.
In early 2010, 3 acres of land was purchased by the county bordering the Gum Branch Park to the west. Building plans aquired from Bryan County were then adapted for use as our new station. In August 2011, the County Commissioners voted to spend almost $700,000 to construct the new station, complete with living quarters to allow for future paid staffing of every county station, and training facilities to comply with ISO requirements.
As of September 19, 2011, the expected start date is around October 1, 2011 with a tentative completion date of April 12, 2012.
The search for more information is ongoing and we will attempt to keep this as up to date as possible.
